Gallery of Modern Art

The most visited art gallery in Scotland, the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art is housed in a stunning neoclassical building in Royal Exchange Square. It showcases a variety of works by both local and international artists.

The museum also features a cafe, free internet access and a learning studio with regular workshops. During the weekend children can learn how to paint like the masters while adults can brush up on their painting skills.

In addition to the modern art exhibits, GoMA also has a wide range of photography and sculpture on display as well. The building itself is quite a sight, with its Corinthian pillars and mosaic facade. A statue of the Duke of Wellington stands in front, wearing a traffic cone as his hat, which has become something of a Glasgow tradition.

Riverside Museum

If you’re interested in learning about Glasgow’s history, then head to the Riverside Museum. This site, formerly the Glasgow Museum of Transport, is located on Pointhouse Quay and features a variety of transportation-related items, from prams to steam locomotives.

This location also includes a moored ship, the Glenlee, which was built in Glasgow and served as a cargo ship and sailing training vessel. Visitors can tour the ship and learn about its many interesting aspects.

While the tour may be a bit challenging for very young children, there’s an on-site soft play area to keep little ones busy. For the adults, there are a few options to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea and take in the scenery.

The Tenement House

If you’re a fan of old style architecture, check out this historic house museum, the Tenement House. This is a re-creation of the living quarters of a typical Scottish tenement from the early 19th century.

The Tenement House is the perfect place to learn about Glasgow’s history from a personal perspective. Previously owned by shorthand typist Agnes Toward, it offers a glimpse into what life was like inside a typical tenement during the early 20th century.
